The City of Sterling announced Monday a call to Station 1 at 4:27pm required the Sterling Fire Department, Rock Falls Fire Department, CGH EMS and Sterling Police Department be dispatched for a possible extinguished structure fire.
Fire units arrived to find the occupant outside and stated she returned home from work and found her home to have had a fire in it. Firefighters confirmed the fire was extinguished, using thermal imaging cameras, however, there was significant damage to the kitchen area and smoke throughout the home.
The occupant lost most of her pets and most belongings unfortunately.
An investigator from the Sterling Fire Department and a Detective from Sterling Police Department completed an investigation and found the fire to be accidental in nature.
ComEd and NICOR also responded to the scene and Sterling’s Code Enforcement will follow up tomorrow.
Names are being withheld at this time, due to family being notified by the occupant. The occupant, nor the responders, sustained any injuries.
